Porsche Cayenne 957 Overland Buyers Guide
The Most Luxurious Off-Road Vehicle?
Lately, the Porsche Cayenne 955/957 has been gaining serious popularity online, with overland builds frequently appearing across Instagram, YouTube, and other social platforms. And for good reason. Read on to find out why this is one of the most underrated overland platforms on the market.
Getting Started
Before Porsche went fully road-oriented with the latest Cayenne models, there are three generations we consider solid platforms for overlanding: the 955, 957, and 958.
Cayenne 955 (2002–2006)
The first-generation Cayenne 955 launched in 2002 and was offered with several engine options, including a 4.5L V8 petrol engine in both Turbo and Turbo S trims, producing up to 521 bhp.
A few years later, Porsche introduced the 3.2L VR6 petrol engine (shared with the VW Golf R32). These engines quickly became known for their reliability, and still are today. We’ve seen examples absolutely punished in the Moroccan desert during the Maroc Challenge, pushing well beyond 200,000 miles.

Cayenne 957 (2007–2010)
From 2007 to 2010, Porsche released the Cayenne 957. While it shared the same chassis as the 955, it received a facelift and revised engine lineup. The 3.2 VR6 was upgraded to a 3.6 VR6, and the 4.5 V8 became a 4.8 V8. Twin-turbo models now produced up to 550 bhp.
In 2009 came our personal favourite, the 3.0 TDI, though unfortunately it was never offered in the US market. This engine, manufactured by Volkswagen, is shared with the VW Touareg and Audi Q7, all of which sit on the same platform. Sadly, this variant was only produced for one year, making it increasingly difficult to source today.

Factory Off-Road Capability
In the early 2000s, there was a significant gap in the market for a luxury performance SUV with genuine off-road capability. While many manufacturers responded, none matched the Cayenne’s hardware.
Depending on spec, Cayennes were available with:
- Low-range gearbox
- Locking differentials
- Air or coil suspension
- Optional off-road package including detachable anti-roll bars
This made the Cayenne a far more capable off-road vehicle than most people realise.
UNICORN: Cayenne S Transsyberia
To prove its capabilities, Porsche built the race-spec Cayenne S Transsyberia for the Transsyberia Rally. Only 285 race cars were produced.
A road-going version followed to commemorate Porsche’s success. Available exclusively on the 957 chassis, it featured the 405 hp 4.8L V8 from the Cayenne GTS. Although Porsche planned a run of 600 units worldwide starting in January 2009, far fewer were actually built, making it one of the rarest Cayennes ever made.

Market Pricing
Today, Cayenne prices range anywhere from £2,000 to £20,000, depending on specification, condition, mileage, and service history.
Engine: 3.0 TDI
As part of the Volkswagen Audi Group, Porsche shares many components across platforms. The engine we focus on is the M 059D, equivalent to VW’s CASA engine found in the Touareg and Audi Q7.
Producing a respectable 240 bhp from the factory, the 3.0 TDI V6 may not sound impressive compared to petrol models, but with tasteful modifications and tuning, it can comfortably keep up with GTS variants.
Get in touch for 3.0 TDI tuning packages producing up to ~400 bhp.
First Steps
Tyres
Tyres should be your very first upgrade. At a minimum, we recommend All-Terrain (AT) tyres, followed by Rugged-Terrain (RT) or Mud-Terrain (MT) depending on usage.
All-Terrains (AT)
Perfect for maintaining comfort and fuel economy on-road while still performing well off-road. Our pick: Falken Wildpeak A/T AT3WA, strong sidewalls, low road noise, and excellent snow performance.

Rugged-Terrains (RT)
A blend of AT and MT characteristics, ideal for sharp rocks, loose dirt, and mud while retaining decent road manners. Our staff pick: Falken Wildpeak R/T.

Mud-Terrains (MT)
Best suited for dedicated off-road use. Expect increased noise, vibration, and reduced fuel economy, but unbeatable off-road traction.

Tyre Sizes
Based on our own builds, we recommend:
- 265/60R18 (30.5”) – Stock height, no rubbing
- 265/65R18 / 285/60R18 (31.6”) – Stock height or lift, minimal rubbing
- 285/65R18 (32.6”) – 2”+ lift required, trimming and intercooler relocation
- 33x12.50R18 (33”) – 2”+ lift, extensive modifications required
Wheels
We recommend 17” or 18” wheels, though brake clearance must be checked carefully. Turbo S models often require smaller brake conversions to fit 18s.
Popular choices include:
Protection & Clearance
Underbody protection is critical. Start with engine and gearbox sump guards, one bad rock can end a trip instantly.
Rock sliders are optional but highly recommended for technical terrain, protecting sills, skirts, and doors.
Lift kits are available in 2” configurations for both coil and air suspension setups, significantly improving ground clearance.
Going All the Way

Whether you’re building a hardcore overlander or a showpiece, our tubular bumpers for the 957 offer increased clearance, protection, and an aggressive stance. These have been thoroughly tested in competition vehicles, including those running the Maroc Challenge.
Although the rear bumper comes with the option of a swing-out wheel carrier, if that option isn’t for you we also offer a slimline roof rack that can be used to store the spare wheel as well as other essentials such as traction boards and fuel cans.
We also offer rear differential guards, rear control arm skid plates, and fuel tank guards for maximum underbody protection.
Lighting is key for tackling lanes in the dark or for low-visibility conditions. We supply plenty of universal lights, from LED bars to spot lights, and complete kits such as front-mounted light bars and ditch lights.
If you’re tackling the roughest terrain, rallying, or the infamous Maroc Challenge, you’ve likely heard of GMC Shocks adjustable coilover suspension. This kit has been developed for prestige builds and transforms your Cayenne to handle like a trophy truck.
When partaking in any off-roading it’s important to carry the right recovery gear, you never know what’s around the next corner. We offer a wide range of recovery gear, as well as a 957 winch plate and winches.
Getting Serious
If you really plan on using your Cayenne to its full potential, we can also offer front and rear locking differentials, which completely change the game.
Need somewhere to organise all that recovery gear or a dedicated space to cook? We’ve designed a specific boot storage system for the Cayennes that can be easily fitted and removed.
